Hunter College mourns the death of Peter Kwong

Dear Colleagues,

It is with great sadness that we write to inform you of the passing of Peter Kwong on Friday, March 17.  Professor Kwong was a Distinguished Professor of Urban Policy and Planning and a Professor of Asian Studies.

Professor Kwong's vision of an intellectual community of Asian American Studies scholars was the driving force behind the creation of the CUNY Mapping Asian American New York (MAANY) faculty seminar. MAANY aims to gather Asian American Studies scholars from Hunter College, CUNY, and other area universities, along with community experts from nonprofit organizations, leaders from ethnic and religious associations, and journalists, artists, and writers, to share their knowledge and perspectives. Since its start in 2014, the MAANY faculty seminar has organized a variety of public events, including panel discussions on the politics of gentrification in Chinatowns, workplace challenges faced by Asian American professionals, and Asian-Latino coalition-building.

Please see the obituary we placed in today’s New York Times in remembrance of Professor Kwong. We know you share our profound sorrow and join us in sending condolences to his wife Dusanka Miscevic. We are working with his family to plan a memorial in his honor to be held later this spring.

Sincerely,

Jennifer J. Raab
