Communication from the Provost Office

Dear Faculty,

Hunter College is moving to a new online bookstore for all textbooks and course materials, commencing with Summer Session One. Students will now be able to order textbooks and course materials online with greater ease, price options, and flexibility, which are then shipped to them directly at no additional cost. After a thorough review process, Akademos has been chosen as Hunter College and CUNY’s online vendor.

As part of our commitment to maintaining a physical storefront to offer supplies and used books, Hunter College and Akademos have partnered with Shakespeare & Co. to provide these goods. In the meantime, the bookstore in the West Building will remain open to offer these items through June.

For faculty, the Online Bookstore will make it easy to select and adopt course materials for classes. Through the Adoption Portal, faculty can:

  • Login using CUNYfirst credentials and see only the courses they are assigned to teach. The information uploaded into the bookstore portal will transfer back to CUNYfirst within 48 hours.
  • Search for textbooks by ISBN or book title.
  • Create a custom CoursePack for courses.
  • Access a portfolio of next-generation, low-cost courseware providers through Akademos Curriculum Services.
  • View previous course and departmental history, along with other recommendations.
  • Review book details prior to adoption.
  • Add ancillary materials, course notes, and files.
  • List real-time pricing and availability for materials.

For students, the Online Bookstore will save money and offer an easy way to order books in less than five minutes. Key features include:

  • A personalized course list that shows the student’s registered courses with all corresponding course materials.
  • A wide variety of low cost textbook formats including new, used, eBooks, and rentals.
  • A peer-to-peer Marketplace, where students can sell books to each other—and save an average of 60 percent off list price.
  • A price match guarantee on new books if a book is priced lower at another retailer.
  • Listings from Amazon and other sellers in the Marketplace for easy price comparisons. Students will always get the right book at the lowest price, even if they choose to shop on third-party websites.
  • Access to year-round, online buyback program through the bookstore's website.
