Lost Class Time

Dear Colleagues:

I write to provide guidance on Hunter's policy for making up for significant lost class time. Our policy intends to ensure compliance with New York State Education Department (NYSED) requirements specifying the number of contact hours per credit, provide our students with the depth and quality of education they need and deserve, and maintain faculty autonomy with regard to curriculum and teaching. Faculty may utilize a variety of options for making up lost class time due to closure of the College. This includes:

  1. Online options, including synchronous or asynchronous activities and assignments;
  2. Assignment of special outside-of-the-classroom experiences, including library and field experiences, group work, the collection and analysis of data, and preparation of reports or other products; or
  3. Rescheduled classroom time.

For each event resulting in the loss of significant classroom time due to closure of the College, faculty should report to their department chairs how they intend to replace the time.

There was a snow day on Monday March 4, 2019. For the spring 2019 semester, Hunter will use the reading day, Wednesday May 15 to accommodate those who wish to reschedule class meetings. All requests for rescheduled classroom time must be received by the respective dean’s office no later than Monday, April 1st.
